The one great thing about Katy Keene is I'll never run out of pin-ups for February since many of her gowns and outfits featured a heart motive.

Sorry it's been a few days since I last posted. I simply forgot to and by the time I remembered it was the next day so decided it wouldn't hurt to go without posting for a few days. As far as I know not very many people visit this blog anyway so nothing will be missed. 

I've read several novels since finishing the Highland Guard series (for now anyway). I'm about

3/4 the way through Arnette Lamb's Border Lord. Very good book. It takes place during the reign of Queen Anne and as you've probably ascertained around the border between England and Scotland. Anne has sent her emissary Lady Miriam McDonald to investigate a dispute between Duncan Kerr and Lord Sinclair who has accused Duncan of kidnapping, among other crimes. He's innocent of the charges but, as always, it is his word against Lord Sinclair's. All Duncan wants is to live in peace to raise his son Malcolm.  I'm at the part where Mariam, who'd been staying with Duncan has gone to talk to Lord Sinclair and Duncan has been visited by the Duchess of Perth who's been trying to get him to remarry. Thus far he has resisted her attempts to have him walk down the aisle for a second time.

I haven't mentioned any books I've been reading of late, just wanted to keep the posting swift and up to date.  I'm reading a book now entitled THE KNIGHT'S BRIDE by Lyn Stone, it is the first in the Trouville Trilogy. The book takes place in 1314 during Robert the Bruce's fight for the
scottish throne.  It is about a knight, Alan Strode, who answers his friends dying wish that he take care of his "bonny" bride Honor, with whom he fell in love with. Honor, on her part, though she cared for Tavish, didn't love him as she should have. In fact she'd used him to get away from her father and an unwanted betrothal to a man she despised and feared, although she made Tavish think that the marriage was sanctioned by her father. She actually forged the marriage papers and lied to him. So far I'm disenchanted with the heroine of this novel. She wants to manipulate Alan, to control him like she did Tavish. So far Alan has unintentionally thwarted her at every turn. He on the other hand has fallen under Honor's spell. He adores her little knowing that she wants to control him so she can have some semblance of freedom.  He's never given her a moment in which to think he is anything like her father, who abused her by locking her away and beating her from time to time, and yet she still wants to have him at her beck and call to do her will.. 

Honestly, the woman annoys the heck out of me. From not wanting Alan to touch her or have any relations with her at all, to trying to entice him to make their marriage "real", she's sending the poor man mixed messages. He figures she is still in love with her first husband, when it is the opposite. She figures that if she allows him access to her and his husbandly rights, she will have more control over him. Alan is not stupid just blinded by her beauty and wanting to be worthy of her by changing his speech (like all scotsman he has that lovely brogue) and even changing his

way of dressing and wearing the garb of an Englishman who'd left his clothes behind after the battle of Bannockburn (where Tavish sustained his mortal wound).  Honor wants him to go back to being a "savage" highlander while Alan is determined to be more of a refined knight and worthy of her. Personally she isn't worthy of him. She's manipulative and tries to use her looks to get what she wants. I mean Alan has taken on the rearing of Tavish's daughter, which he didn't have to do. In fact he loves little Christiana as if the little babe where is own. What more can a woman ask for? At any rate, I suppose I can understand why she's the way she is given the time period she lives in where pretty much all women were considered property rather than a person within themselves with thoughts, feelings and ideas all their own.  I'm at the part in the book where Honor's father has just shown up and demanded that she be returned to him, to which Alan has refused. Seeing as her father has brought an army with him, she's afraid that he'll overcome Alan's meager forces and she'll be forced to wed the man she ran from. Alan has sent a message to his estranged father (who he hasn't seen since he was 7 and he's in his twenties now) for help but has yet to receive a reply
I have to purchase the other books in the series but at least I started with the first one. There are actually five books that have characters that are related in one way or another to each other. I found out about the fourth and fifth books, THE QUEST and MY LADY'S CHOICE, when I was looking up the synopsis for the second book in the series, BRIDE OF TROUVILLE.

JANE ARDEN WEARING NATIVE AMERICAN COSTUMES

For today's paper doll we have Jane back in the USA and wearing native american costumes.  I may be wrong but I believe the costumes are supposed to represent the plains and eastern tribes. though I may be wrong.  I also find it interesting that she has a warrior bonnet when women never wore them and they were reserved for the men of the tribes.  Back in the 30's people thought that the native americans had all but disappeared from history, except for those relegated to reservations.  I remember watching old westerns and how they made native americans no more than "savages" out for white mens blood. Which was far from the truth. My first experience with the truth of how native americans were treated was in high school and a history teacher named Mr. Biggs (who passed away in 2012), he opened my eyes to the fact that how they were preseaved as murdering heathens was all wrong. They had a genuine issue with how the white man treated them. After all, the white man was the invader NOT the native americans.  It was always a given that they were supposed to just let the white man have the land that their ancestors had lived on for generations and they should give in and move away, find somewhere else to live because God had given the land to the white man. Of course there was that convert or be killed edict that the religious sector touted as well.  I could never understand that one. Was not the "Great Spirit" the same God that Europeans worshiped only under a different name? Maybe they didn't have a building to worship their God in but they still asked the Great Spirit for guidance just as the European settlers did.  Mr. Biggs showed me that what the white man wrote in their history books and said were "fact" was sometimes embellished and at times out right lies.  And as my mother always said there are always two sides to every tale told.  After that I read all I could on the native american struggle and ever since have been sympathetic to their cause.  I especially didn't like how they were portrayed in early westerns.  So imagine my delight when I saw Dances with Wolves.

Not a very good copy but it came from a disk that someone had made up and sold on Ebay. I do have a black and white version of this in a reference book that is much better but I haven't scanned it yet (which is how I found the date for the paper doll). I will in future and add it to this posting or a one for next year with a link to this picture.

Perth

In the Arrow (which I'm almost finished with) Cate has been captured by English troops who are garrisoned at Perth in order to get Arrow to turn himself over to them. I haven't been able to put the book down for the last couple of days. One of the best ones of the series thus far. Seton has been mentioned again as a traitor but I don't think so. It's been awhile since he turned himself in and he has yet to betray his brethren. I'm eager to find out what has happened to Dragon. Hopefully her next book in the series will be about him or Campbell. 


Today we find Jane in Czechoslovakia I know I use a lot of links to Wikipedia and that most people agree that it isn't that accurate due to the nature of the site as one you can add on to, but so far I haven't found anything at Wikipedia that is not truthful.

Todays card from the book is of two children who have fallen asleep while making their wish list. 

In the Raider they've left Kirkton Manor and are now in Etterick Forest. Robbie fund out about the escape attempt and was none to pleased with it. I'm at the part where it's the second day of their arrival at their main camp and Rosalin is assisting him (reluctantly I might add) with his bath. 

Here is Jane in Palestine. Next time it will be Jane in Czechoslovakia.

JANE ARDEN IN BULGARIA

Continuing with Jane's travel overseas, here she is from 1933 in the native costumes of Bulgaria. You can find the doll for these outfits here. I think the one thing that bothers me about collecting the newspaper dolls are the ones like this where one week they'd publish the doll and the next week just the costumes.  At the time, since most people got the Sunday paper, it was easy to get the costumes for the next week but now, 80 years later, for someone who loves paper dolls and enjoys collecting them, it's difficult to get these. Also you can pay a high price for them since they are so hard to come by. This one, among other Jane Arden's, was bought from someone who had the foresight to make these available on a CD before they sold the original on Ebay.  The scans were a bit on the small size but the dpi was at 300 so blowing them up into a larger format still made them decently printable for those who might like to actually cut them out.  Next week (7 days from now) Jane will be in Palestine. She will also be in a different pose.

In future postings, up until Christmas, I am hoping to post some Christmas activity pages for those with young ones. This will include printable coloring pages and crafts to do and make. 

I'm pretty much finished with The Italian's Virgin Bride. The two main characters have made up their differences (as if there was any doubt, it's a Harlequin after all) and Joelle did end up marrying Leo. There is a minor character in the book named Lacey, who was Joelle's roommate. I rather wonder if Porter did a book featuring her. I'm not sure why but the name seems familiar. It could be though that another author had a character named Lacey.  I do have to get another novel by Porter entitled His Majesty's Mistake as it is linked by character to The Sheikh's Virgin. It's not a part of any series but after reading the synopsis on the book found that it does relate to a character mentioned in one of her Sheikh books. So naturally I'll have to get that book too. I try to collect all my favorite authors which constitutes having a very large book collection. While one would wonder why I need so many books and have I read them all,  I would answer that I do need the books because I will read them again at a future date (I've read Johanna Lindsey's novels several times over the years and am still picking up her novels as they are released then re read the ones that it pertains to such as her Mallory series) and no I haven't read all the books in my collection. Eventually I intend to but wouldn't be surprised that I never do get a chance to read every single book in my personal library. And though I can get the majority of the books I own on Kindle, I LIKE to see all the books that I have in front of me rather than on a digital device. 

Eventually though I will have to break down and purchase a Kindle simply because some of my favorite authors release novellas having to do with characters in their books only in e-book form. Such as The Knight by Monica McCarty.  It's a novel that is in between book 7 and 8 of her series and according to the Fantastic Fiction site I visit from time to time (a great way to keep up with the books coming out by my favorite authors, they have over 30,000 authors listed at their site) it is book 7.5 since it is a novella rather than a full length book and is about James Douglas, (The Black as he was referred to back then) one of the Highland Guard.  So whether I like it or not, I'm going to eventually invest in one of the new fangled electronic devices. It would be sweet if I could just download the book on my computer rather than purchase the Kindle in order to read the book but according to Amazon, you have to buy the Kindle in order to download the novel.  Which rather bites since I have a means of reading the novella digitally and, as far as I'm concerned, should be able to download it onto a computer rather than the digital book.

JANE ARDEN PAPER DOLL DECEMBER 8, 1935

Not to much to post today. Just posting a paper doll. I want to at least keep the posting of my paper doll collection going now that I found the file again. My collection is far more extensive than I'd thought. Especially the collection that includes paper dolls from the comics section of the newspaper.  I don't think I'm going to run out of something to post any time soon.

Love the mans swimming costume. Isn't that what they called swimwear back then?  I can't even imagine a guy wearing that on the beach today. And the shoes!!  Looks strange to see a man in a bathing costume with dress shoes on his feet.  I am in the process of converting this one to a black and white print, but it's going to take a little while due to all the dark tones in this one, I have to take all the dark areas out section by section rather than just converting it to grayscale then a bitmap image.  I've got an notion to take all the Jane's and Boots paper dolls I've collected over the years and match up all the clothes that go with the doll in a particular pose. I have started to do this with my Katy Keene collection. It's then just a matter of sizing the clothes to fit the dolls as not all the dolls were the same size even though the poses were identical.  And the clarity of some of my newspaper dolls are less than perfect and of course some of the renditions of her are photos while others are scans which will constitute me drawing the outfits by hand. In other words, I've got quite a task ahead of me should I chose to undertake doing it for Jane, Boots and also Brenda Starr. Tillie the Toiler always had different poses each week, so doing the same for her is impractical, though I could do a set named Tammy or something along those lines featuring the clothes from the strips.

In The Sultan's Bought Bride just about finished the book. I'm on the last few pages. Malik let Nicolette know that he did know she wasn't her sister and married her anyway because he had fallen in love with her.  As for Nicolette, she, naturally, fell in love with him and while she previously was against marriage, is eager to become his wife. She's also fallen in love with his country. Which is in Northern Africa just north of the Sahara desert.  I'll probably be finished with it by this evening or sometime tomorrow and will begin the final book in the series. 

Today's paper doll is a Jane Arden from 1933. A different doll from the last one posted. I will be posting her in Bulgaria on the 10th.

A JANE ARDEN FROM 1936

Very short positing as I've  not to much to say today.  I'm still reading The Sultan's Bought Bride and as I suspected Malik does know that Nicolette is not her sister. He wonders how far she's going to take the charade she is playing. Nicolette, of course, doesn't realise that Malik knows exactly who she is. She is finding it harder and harder to resist his charm and for his part Malik is finding that he prefers Nicolette's free spirited nature to Chantal's more biddable one. 

The paper doll for today is from 1936. I get the impression that Jane is walking up hill.

IN BATTLE WITH DARTH VADER CONTINUED...

In Battle With Darth Vader continued...

I've just started a book entitled The Greek's Royal Mistress. Not much is happening at the moment though. It's the beginning of the book and the plane Princess Chantel is on is about to crash and she's trying to keep herself calm by talking to another passenger; Demetrius Mantheakis. It never takes me very long to read a Harlequin. I usually finish it within a day of starting it unless it's boring and I'm struggling to finish it. Jane Porter is one of my favorite authors so I suspect I'll probably finish it by tomorrow evening or Monday morning.
